Juniors
Juniors
The Junior Syndicate comprises 12 classrooms over 6 sites, in satellite units in mainstream schools. The Junior Syndicate is divided into two sections - New Entrants and Upper Juniors.
New Entrants
The New Entrants section welcomes tamariki aged 5 - 7.
An important aspect of our work is managing highly individualised transitions into school for the tamariki and their whānau, to ensure success and wellbeing. The key to our approach is developing a love of school and learning, based on feelings of joy, safety, connection and self-worth.
We also set the groundwork for a collaborative partnership between home and school, which will support the learner and whānau to the age of 21. Central to students’ success in the long term is addressing the anxiety of learners and concerns of their whānau through the first few years at school.
We provide a balanced programme that covers all curriculum areas and is personalised to each individual learner's needs, interests, and levels. We also have a strong focus on:
social interaction - how to get on with and enjoy the company of others;
social communication - communicating with others to share feelings and thoughts;
sensory programmes - understanding the needs of the body and preparing for learning.
Upper Juniors
Upper Juniors creates a pathway that supports our ākonga to reach their potential. This means creating a classroom environment that meets all the individual needs of our learners. In Upper Juniors we build on relationships with a special focus on working with peers and making friends.
We use programs such as
TEACCH
Experience Sharing
Intensive Interaction
Attention Autism
Increased opportunities for integration allows students to participate in programmes shared with our host schools. Here they can practice the social skills that they have learnt in our classroom. All of these activities prepare them for their learning in intermediate.
