Senior School

Senior School

The Senior Syndicate comprises 8 classrooms over 4 sites, 7 of which are in satellite units in mainstream schools, and one at Oaklynn Base School. The Senior Syndicate is divided into two sections - Intermediate and High School.

Intermediate

The Intermediate classes cater for students aged 10 to 14.

Across the two satellite units, students are placed within groups of similar learning levels with like-minded peers. In our intermediate classes, we focus on building upon fundamental skills (started within the junior years) within the areas of social and functional communication, work skills and independence. This learning plays a vital role in helping us to prepare our learners to join the senior school.

Students are given opportunities and experiences to broaden their horizons during the intermediate years, helping them discover their individual identities and aspirations. This, in turn, encourages them to express themselves as developing young people. To help our young people understand and manage their emotional needs , there are various programmes where our learners are taught strategies to self-regulate and relax. Additionally there is a strong focus on language experiences including reading and writing activities designed specifically for our learners.

High School

High School students work hard on an adapted curriculum that allows them to further develop their independence and life skills. The mainstream setting allows for some integration and interaction with mainstream students.  The five classes in the syndicate cater for students' individual needs.

SPEC is a New Zealand designed supported learning course that enables all students to access the NZ curriculum at whatever level they are working. Our High School students follow the SPEC programme, with students participating in TRUMP or HEADWAY modules to facilitate their learning.

Students at the High School follow the TRUMP programme, which provides learning opportunities over eight curriculum areas, whilst working on their key competencies. Base Room 1 students visit Te Aratika and often participate in events at GBHS.
